Robot and PLC Integration: A Survey Checklist Before Quoting
Clarify cycle time, handled parts, signal interfaces, safety and acceptance before investing in production line automation.

An automation system needs to be evaluated against the actual process and operating conditions. Choosing a robot or PLC before the task is clearly defined can leave the investment scope mismatched with the need. Start with product data, cycle times and the limitations of the current line.
Describe the task step by step
Specify the inputs, operations, end point and conditions for a good part. For pick-and-place, you need to know the loading position, the receiving position, the part's dimensions and weight, and the gripping tool. If there are multiple part numbers, provide the range of variation and how changeover works, instead of describing only the most convenient sample.
Distinguish station cycle time from system cycle time
Time the related steps, including part feeding, machine waiting and part removal. A faster operation does not by itself guarantee higher output for the whole line when the bottleneck is at another station. The target cycle time must come with agreed test conditions and representative product types.
List the control interfaces
Provide information on the PLC, the equipment in use, electrical diagrams and the signal interfaces available for exchange. Clarify program modification rights, the status of backups and connection conditions. Do not assume devices can communicate with each other just because they support the same protocol name.
Safety must be assessed from the start
The system layout needs to consider the operating envelope, operator access and maintenance modes. Guarding, emergency stops and interlocks must be designed and assessed by qualified personnel according to the applicable requirements. This survey list does not replace the plant's risk assessment or safety procedures.
Define the handover and acceptance scope
State clearly which mechanical, electrical, software, installation and training work is included in the contract. Agree on the test products, trial run duration, failure criteria and how stoppages are recorded. List the documents, program backups and operating instructions to be handed over to avoid relying on verbal agreements.
Prepare for a site survey with ZINITEK
Send the floor plan, a video of the process if it may be shared, product data, cycle times and the targets to be achieved. State any constraints on floor space, power supply, machine downtime and equipment that must be retained. Complete documentation provides a sound basis for discussing the solution before finalizing the investment list.
