Restoring Machine Parts Without Drawings: What Needs to Be Surveyed?
A checklist for surveying the old part, worn areas, mating parts and operating conditions before rebuilding drawings for replacement manufacturing.

When an old machine no longer has its documentation, copying the exact shape of a failed part does not necessarily produce a suitable replacement. The part may already be worn, deformed or previously repaired. The first task is to separate the observed geometry from the functional requirements that need to be restored.
Record the current condition before disassembly
Photograph the mounting position, working direction and contact surfaces. Record operating symptoms and any repair history. Removal of the part should be carried out by qualified personnel following the equipment's procedures; do not keep running a damaged component just to collect more data.
Distinguish original surfaces from damaged areas
Mark areas of wear, cracking, scoring or deformation. Dimensions measured in these areas reflect the current condition, not necessarily the design dimensions. If a part in good condition, spare parts documentation or an equivalent location on the machine is available, provide it for comparison instead of rounding dimensions based on guesswork.
Measure the mating parts too when needed
Shafts, bores, locating faces and related mechanisms help determine the fit conditions. A single part may not provide enough data to choose the nominal dimension or the type of fit. For gears, the geometric parameters and meshing conditions need to be clarified; the outside diameter alone is not enough to order manufacturing.
Confirm the material and operating conditions
Collect old documentation and requirements for hardness, heat treatment and the operating environment. Do not determine the material grade from color or photos alone. If the material needs to be identified by testing, record this as a separate part of the scope and agree on the criteria before it is carried out.
Approve drawings before production
The rebuilt documentation should clearly show which areas have been confirmed and which assumptions are still awaiting approval. For functionally critical parts, design verification and trial fitting must be planned in advance. A good fit should not be treated as the only evidence of long-term performance.
Documents for discussing drawing restoration
Send photos of the current condition, any samples you can provide, overall dimensions, machine information and mating parts. State whether the goal is to restore documentation, manufacture a single part or prepare repeat spare parts. ZINITEK reviews this information to discuss the survey scope and the documents to be delivered.
