Comparing CNC Machining Quotes: Look Beyond the Unit Price

Two quotes for the same part can differ because the scope of work is different. Before choosing the lower price, check whether both offers are based on the same material, drawing revision, quantity and acceptance conditions.

Compare against the same data set

Send the same drawing and quantity to every supplier you ask for a quote. State the revision and the request date to avoid comparing an old quote with a new design. Separate the prototype quantity from the production quantity; an offer for prototypes only does not reflect the conditions of a repeat order.

Are the materials really equivalent?

A generic name such as steel or aluminum is not enough to confirm equivalence. Compare the material grade, heat treatment condition and certificate requirements. If a quote proposes a material substitution, ask for the alternative to be listed separately and approve it only after assessing the function of the part.

Check the costs outside the unit price

Ask whether setup costs, dedicated fixtures, surface treatment, inspection, packaging and shipping are included. For materials or fixtures paid for separately by the buyer, agree on ownership and terms of use for future orders. A low initial price may not mean the lowest total cost when several operations have not been accounted for.

Do the measurement reports and inspection have the same scope?

Compare the list of dimensions to be inspected, the sample size and the type of report delivered. Do not treat the phrase "quality inspection" as a complete scope: both sides need to agree specifically on what is measured and against which acceptance criteria. Full inspection and sampling inspection are two different scopes.

Lead time must come with input conditions

Confirm when the lead time starts: after drawing approval, after material is available or after sample approval. Clarify whether delivery is in one shipment or several, and how design changes by the buyer will be handled. Do not compare a conditional lead time with an unconditional delivery commitment.

How to make the decision

Build a comparison table item by item instead of simply ranking prices from low to high. Any unclear points should be confirmed in the quote itself or through formal communication before ordering. When sending a request to ZINITEK, include the acceptance scope so the discussion focuses on exactly the product you need to receive.
