Choosing a Coil Construction: Through-Hole, Base-Mounted or Insulated?

The mechanical construction affects how a coil is assembled and connected. The form should be chosen together with the mounting location, production handling and inspection requirements, not just based on an attractive sample photo or the size of the core.

Through-hole pins: prioritize board compatibility

For through-hole terminations, clarify the pin pitch, terminal dimensions and the height after mounting. Check both whether the component can be inserted into position and the clearance around it. If the circuit board is already fixed, the footprint and mechanical limits are key data when ordering samples.

Base-mounted: define how the assembly is located

A base can help with positioning and locating, but a proper fit still needs to be verified against a drawing or sample. State the support areas, where the component is held and the handling requirements. Do not assume an off-the-shelf base will be compatible with every circuit board or every fastening method.

Insulated: put the requirements in the documents

If an outer insulation layer is needed, define the areas to be covered, the lead positions and the operating conditions. The material, thickness and test method must be chosen according to the technical requirements. An external photo is not enough to determine the insulation class, heat resistance or electrical test results of a sample.

Flat coils for wireless chargers: working with the transmitter circuit

In a wireless charger, the transmitter coil (Tx) generates an alternating magnetic field to transfer power to the receiver coil (Rx) in the device. An assembly of three overlapping flat coils is one transmitter-side layout used to support the device placement area. When ordering a coil assembly, fix the dimensions, inductance and tolerance under defined measurement conditions, DCR, terminations, the magnetic layer construction and the distance to the receiver coil. Efficiency and temperature must be evaluated together with the control circuit and the complete mounting structure; the target power is not a default rating of the coil on its own.

Accept the construction together with the electrical characteristics

Inspect samples for dimensions, fit, lead identification and the agreed electrical measurements. Agree on how changes to the pins or insulation after sample approval will be handled. Send ZINITEK reference photos along with the mounting drawing to discuss a clear solution before ordering a production lot.
