Restoring Technical Drawings for a Legacy Rolling Mill Gear System

Using a 3D laser scanner to capture point cloud data, then rebuilding 3D CAD models and producing manufacturing drawings for discontinued parts.

Restoring Technical Drawings for a Legacy Rolling Mill Gear System

When an old drive component no longer has drawings, recovering the technical data helps prepare for replacement manufacturing and maintenance. It is essential to distinguish the shape as measured from the original design shape, especially on worn surfaces.

From scan data to a CAD model

Point cloud or surface mesh data is the input for rebuilding the CAD model. Functional features such as shaft bores, datum faces and meshing surfaces need to be evaluated together with the assembly conditions. Scan data does not automatically replace the need to specify material, heat treatment or tolerances.

Deliverables to agree on

The scope of work should clearly define the 3D model, manufacturing drawings, file formats and the dimensions to be verified. For worn or damaged areas, mating parts and operating information should be provided to determine how to restore them; wear marks should not simply be copied into the replacement design.

Need to restore drawings for a discontinued spare part? Send photos, overall dimensions, the condition of the part and assembly information so ZINITEK can assess what data needs to be collected and discuss a suitable approach.
